Can I Use Regular Eye Drops While Wearing Daily Contact Lenses?

I’ve always heard that you shouldn’t use eye drops while wearing contact lenses because the eye drops are retained on the surface of the contact. But, what if I am throwing them out daily and only applying drops 2-3 times a day. Is this safe?

  1. You most definitely can wear contacts while putting eye drops in, but it depends on the eye drop. Try to get an eye drop specifically for contacts because it does not contain benzalkonium chloride (BAK). BAK is a preservative in most eye drop solutions. Just recently doctors have found BAK, a positively charged detergent, binds to the negatively charged contact lens surface resulting in redness and irritation. If you must use an eye drop containing BAK, first, put in the drops and wait 10-15 minutes to put your contact lenses on, you should be fine then. All BAK dissolves in your eye within 5 minutes. So you should be good after 10-15 minutes.

    Hope this helps.
